Compost bins
Composting is a simple, low cost way to re-use your food and garden waste as fertiliser for your garden. A good compost mix contains food scraps, green garden waste and brown or dry garden waste. Green waste can include grass clippings and food scraps from the kitchen, while brown garden waste is dried leaves, twigs, paper and straw. Your compost will also need the right amount of moisture and air to allow the microbes to convert your waste to valuable compost for your garden.
As the waste is broken down by the micro-organisms the compost heap can heat up to 60°C, helping to kill off weed seeds and pathogens. Your finished compost should be dark and crumbly and can be used to fertilise your garden. Compost adds nutrients as well as organic matter, which will improve soil structure and water holding capacity of your soil.
Council sells the 220 litre Gedye compost bin made from recycled plastic or you can make your own compost bin using timber or brick sides with an open bottom and carpet for the top. The open bottom allows insects and worms to enter the compost and help break down the compost. Carpet or covering over the top allows you to control the moisture in the compost heap as it needs to be moist but not wet.
Don’t forget to add some soil or compost to your new compost bin to add the micro-organisms you need to break down your waste.
