Worm farms
Worm farming is a great way to re-use your kitchen scraps and produce your very own natural fertiliser for your garden or pot plants. Worms are a low maintenance pet for children and a good supply of fishing bait that you don’t have to go shopping for. If your worm farming is successful it shouldn’t smell and won’t take up much time or space.
Council sells the Reln Worm Factory, which is made of 100% recycled plastic. Ask one of our Customer Service Officers about purchasing your very own Worm Factory. We also operate our own Reln Worm Factory at the Administration building, re-using staff food scraps and providing worm castings and liquid fertiliser.
Some hints and tips from Reln
When purchasing your worms, be sure to get at least 1,000 composting worms. Less than 1,000 worms to start your Reln Worm Factory will retard the operation of your system, whereas more than 1,000 will increase the initial effectiveness. The worms will double their number naturally in a few months.
Feeding
Maintain two centimetres of food over half the surface area of the Reln Worm Factory. Chop up your food scraps into smaller pieces to help them break down faster or try microwaving or blending to really speed up the process.
DO NOT OVERFEED. Don’t feed your worms pesticides or vermicides (flies after spraying with fly spray, pet poo after worming your pets) as these will kill your worms too!
Temperature
Worms will tolerate temperatures from about 10-30°C. If it gets hotter than this place the factory in a cool, shady spot. In frost areas place in the warmest position possible or cover with thick carpet or blankets to retain the warmth.
Smell
Your worm factory should smell like rich, loamy topsoil. If the factory does smell it is an indication that anaerobic bacteria have built up in uneaten food wastes. Stop adding food and mix in the left over food and some lime. Don’t feed again until the factory stops smelling.
