Keeping of pigs

Pigs are generally not suitable to be kept in urban areas. There are specific requirements that pigs must not be kept in a place where they or any of their waste are likely to pollute any water.

Pigs must also not be kept (and pig’s dung must not be deposited) within 60 metres of any dwelling, shop, office, factory, church or other place of public worship, workshop, school or public place in an urban area.

Council may serve notices and orders on owners keeping pigs which prescribe a greater distance from other premises if the circumstances warrant.
