Motor Vehicles in New South Wales are regulated by the Australia Road Rules.
This provides for the effective movement and free flow of traffic in the State of New South Wales.
The Australian Road Rules provides a number of regulations for the parking of motor vehicles to assist with the safety of other road users, including pedestrians.
This guide will help you understand the road rules about parking and the possible penalties if you do not adhere to those road rules.
Parking on footpaths and in or across driveways
You cannot park on a nature strip, even if two wheels are on the road and whether or not there is a footpath or kerb and guttering. This is for pedestrian access safety.
Penalty $86.00
You cannot park on the road blocking a driveway or on the driveway (even you own) outside the property boundary. This is for pedestrian safety.

Not park parallel in direction of traffic
When you parallel park, you must park your vehicle pointing in the same direction as the flow of traffic closest to your vehicle. This is for traffic flow safety.

Double parking
You cannot stop on a road next to other parked cars (even if you have you hazard lights on) unless you are about to park your vehicle. This is for traffic flow safety.

Bus Stops/ Bus Zones
You cannot park within 20 metres before a Bus Stop unless there are signs that permit parking. This is for the safety of bus passengers.

No Stopping
You must not stop on a length of road to which a No Stopping Sign Applies. This is for the safety of other vehicles.

Loading Zones
You cannot park or stop your vehicle in a loading zone. This is for the safety of other vehicles.

Taxi Zones
You must not stop on a length of road to which a Taxi Zone sign applies. This is for the safety of taxi passengers

Mail Zones
You cannot stop or park your vehicle on a length of road to which a mail zone applies.
This is for the safety of other vehicles.

Timed Parking
You must not exceed the time limit specified for a parking area. This is for the convenience of other vehicle owners.

Stopping on or near a pedestrian crossing (except at an intersection)
You must not stop on a pedestrian crossing that is not at an intersection or on the road within 20 metres before the crossing and 10 metres after the crossing. This is for pedestrian safety.
