Industrial Estate Sewer Project
Council is about to embark on the significant undertaking of construction of a reticulated sewer system to the Muswellbrook Industrial area along Thomas Mitchell Drive. The construction of this system will significantly benefit the industrial sector in particular, and the overall community in general. Such a facility will eliminate the significant existing problems associated with management of on-site disposal of effluent. This will allow additional production capacity in businesses as a result of the ability to dispose of larger quantities of wastewater, whilst freeing up land area on each block that is currently used for onsite effluent disposal.
Funding
The cost of this project is estimated at $3 million. It is industry practice for water authorities sewering backlog areas such as this to require property owners to contribute half the capital cost of construction for the project. Instead, as Council has secured a grant to cover 50% of the total capital cost, Council has made the decision to bear the balance of the project costs. Funding for this scheme will be recovered by a modest increase in the sewer usage rate across Council’s full customer base. The increase in rate will be from $1.68/kL to approximately $1.72/kL.
