Citizen of the Year
The Citizen of the Year is awarded to a person who has made a significant contribution and service to the community either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years. Nominees must be residents of Muswellbrook Shire.
Christine is being recognised for her achievements in the Community which includes:
- Being an active part of the Muswellbrook Community for 30 years.
- Being President of the Upper Hunter Eisteddfod from 2001-2006, 2008-2012 (volunteer).
- Being a Girl Guides Leader from 1991-2011.
- Being a Girl Guides District Leader since 2008.
- Being an active member of the Muswellbrook Baptist Church for 30 years.
- Being an “Upper Hunter Hall of Fame” community member.
- Being a member of the Working Party for Campbell’s Corner.
Gordon is being recognised for his contribution to the local community which include:
- Being the first Announcer at Commercial Radio 2NM Muswellbrook.
- Being in the Muswellbrook Hall of Fame for Media.
- Helping to raise money for dialysis machines.
- Promoting the Hunter Valley area as a volunteer since 1997.
- Helping to set up the 2NM’s Tourist Radio in the Muswellbrook Shire
Les is being recognised for his contribution to the local community which includes:
- Being involved with the rehabilitation of Vietnam Veterans.
- Being involved with the Returned Serviceman’s League.
- Being involved in the restoration of the Baerami Community Hall including cutting timber.
- Donating timber for the constructions of the Hyde Park toilet block.
- Being involved in the erection of a verandah roof of the Denman Golf Club house.
- Being involved in the erection of a lockable storage shed at the Denman Golf Club house.
- Being involved in the organisation of every Anzac Day march.
Bruce James is being recognised for his contribution to the local community which includes:
- Being the Secretary of the Muswellbrook Table Tennis Association from 1957-58.
- Being a part of the Muswellbrook Apex Club from 1957-1975 and was President 1969- 1970; Secretary twice; Treasurer four times. Most effective Apexian 1970, life member 1975 and Zone 10 Secretary-Treasurer 1970-71.
- Being a part of Muswellbrook Golf Club form 1956-1975; Treasurer 1987 and C grade Champion in 1965
- Being involved in Muswellbrook Meals on Wheels Inc. from 1970-present; inaugural Treasurer; Treasurer three times; President six times; committee or executive 37 years and made a life member in 2008.
- Being a part of Muswellbrook Municipal Council from 1974 to 1979
- Being a part of Muswellbrook Shire Council from 1979-1983 and was Vice chairman for Finance Committee seven years in a row; and has been on the Heritage Committee since 2008.
Ruth is being recognised for her contribution to the local community which includes:
- Devoting her time to working with special needs children and their families;
- Working in the Support Unit at the Muswellbrook South Public School;
- Being involved in Hunter Life, Variety Club, Riding for the Disabled, Stewart House, Royal Far West, Church and Social Welfare Groups;
- Being responsible for introducing the “inclusion” of special needs children in all activities at a school level;
- Organising numerous funding raising events;
- Being responsible for introducing the “Community Access Program” for students with a disability;
- Organising community events;
- Being responsible for forming and implementing Individual Education Programs for special needs students;
- Supporting and assisting in the successful grant for funding for a new Support Unit at Muswellbrook South Public School;
- Being awarded the NSW Education Week Award of Excellence for her work with special needs students and their families in 2003.
Pamela is being recognised for her contribution to the local community which includes:
- Being a member on the panel to choose Year 12 students to receive Bengalla Mine Scholarships at Muswellbrook High School.
- Being involved in interviews and selection of new teachers at Muswellbrook High School.
- Being as life member of NSW Parents and Citizens as well as being a member of the Muswellbrook High School P&C for 25 years.
- Being a mentor with Muswellbrook High School mentoring program since it began in 2005.
- Being a member of Toastmasters.
- Being a member on the Sports Advisory Committee.
- Being a member of Park Tennis Club where she has held the position of Publicity Officer for a number of years.
- Being a valuable member of Red Cross for the past 10 years.
- Being a community member of the Hunter New England Area Health Advisory Committee.
- Being involved in the judging of Business of the Year Award for the past three years in conjunction with the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
- Being a committee member of the Cancer Council Relay for Life in 2006.
- Volunteering for Anglican Church.
Mark is being recognised for many years of continuous voluntary community service to Muswellbrook Shire and the residents of Muswellbrook which includes:
- Pursuing funding applications to the value of $50,000 for many organisations for such items as chairs for dialysis at the Muswellbrook Hospital, catering trailer for Lions Club; training and operational equipment for Muswellbrook SES and a motor vehicle for the Upper Hunter Non-Emergency Medical Transport Service;
- Being a Member of the Lions Club of Muswellbrook (21 years), Upper Hunter Non-Emergency Transport Service (20 years), Muswellbrook State Emergency Service (14 years), Neighbourhood First Aid (10 years), Muswellbrook Hospital Health Reference Group (3 years), Northern Federation Justices of the Peace (1 year) and Red Cross Voluntary Aid Service Corps (past 2 years).
- Receiving the New South Wales Governments Community Service Award for services to the community in 2003.
- Being a member of the Muswellbrook SES and then being appointed Local Controller in August 2005.
- Being a volunteer at the Sydney Olympic Games, the Rugby World Cup and the Quirindi Leg of the Olympic Torch Relay.
Janelle is being recognised for many years of continuous voluntary community service to Muswellbrook Shire and the residents of Muswellbrook including:
- Providing First Aid Assistance through Muswellbrook Red Cross
- Assists with the organization of the annual Camp Quality Charity Ball.
- Volunteer work with the Muswellbrook Art Gallery
- Member of the Muswellbrook SES, assisting with disasters such as the Newcastle Earthquake, Thredbo, Sydney Hailstorm and many others
William "Bill" Griffiths has spent countless hours working for the benefits of the Shire both in Denman for many years and more recently in Muswellbrook.
In Denman, Bill was involved with the Development Assn, Denman Creek Committee, Tidy Town, Lions Club and Main Street Committee.
Since moving to Muswellbrook, Bill has a major involvement Upper Hunter Training and Muswellbrook Community Centre.
