Young Citizen of the Year
The Young Citizen of the Year awarded to a person who has made a significant contribution and service to the community either as a result of a particular event or in performing a service over a number of years. Nominees must be residents of Muswellbrook Shire and be no more than 25 years of age at 1st January each year.
Stephen is being recognised for his contribution to the local community which include:
- Holding the position as representative on the Student Representative Council in years 7-9, 11 and 12 and was chairperson in 2009.
- Leading horses for Riding for the disabled.
- Being a member of the Amateur RSL Youth Swimming Club.
- Coached a Junior Hockey team.
- Being a Life Saving Instructor for Schools Life Saving program.
- Participating in the Upper Hunter Eisteddfod from 2005 to current.
- Hosting American Billets as part of the PCYC People to People Program.
- Participating in the Lions Youth of the Year Challenge.
- Participating in Laps for Life in 2009.
- Participating in Clean Up Australia Day.
Lucy is being recognised for her achievements at St Joseph’s High School which includes:
- Achieving among the top two positions in assessment in all of her subjects in the HSC.
- Being a member of her school band and choir.
- Organising and running the Seniors Country Fair during Senior Citizens Week in 2009.
- Organising and running the St Joseph’s canteen at the Highland Games in 2009.
- Organising and running the Stars Workshops for the disabled during the first week of January.
- Organising and running St Joseph’s Trivia Nights.
- Participating in the Lion’s Club Youth of the Year Competition in 2008 for Aberdeen Lions Club.
- Being President of the Junior St Vincent De Paul.
- Being President of the School’s Representative Council in 2008.
- Being an executive member of the Social Justice Committee.
Hannah Buam
Hannah is being recognised for her contribution to the local community which includes:
- Volunteering for the school musical in front of House, canteen, hair/makeup and photography.
- Participating and achieving Club Level Winner for Public Speaking in 2008 Lions Youth of the Year Quest.
- Being Liaison person for parents and community members at Orientation Days.
- Speaking at the Anzac Service in 2008.
Carly is being recognised for her contribution to the local community which includes:
- Being involved in many School and Community organisations and activities;
- Receiving the Australian Defence Force Leadership and Teamwork Award in 2007;
- Performing at Muswellbrook Christmas Carols at the Showground in 2006;
- Assistant Coach of the Under 15 State Age Netball Team in 2006;
- Receiving the Mt Arthur Coal Award for Community Service in 2007;
- Receiving the Muswellbrook RSL Sub Branch Award and Certificate of Appreciation in 2007.
Murray is being recognised for his academic and community achievements which includes:
- Achieving excellent results in Advanced English, Engineering Studies, Physics and Business Studies.
- Studying 2 Unit Economics via Distance Learning.
- Representing the Student Body of Muswellbrook High School to the Media when the Conferencing Link was launched in 2005.
- Being a committed and valuable member of a number of sporting teams for both Muswellbrook High School and the Community such as Water Polo, Rugby League and Rugby Union.
- Being a member of the Muswellbrook High School Stage Band and Concert Band, playing both Tuba and Drums and the School’s Jazz group “Nine to Tango” who have performed at Eisteddfod, school musicals, community functions, special school functions and to students at primary schools throughout the Upper Hunter.
- Being an integral member of the Muswellbrook Shire Concert Band for 10 years.
- Being a State finalist in the Public Speaking Competition in 2004 and 2005.
- Winning the Lions Club Regional Public Speaking Award.
- Participating in the Model United Nations Assembly in 2004 and 2005.
- Being a member of the MUNA Team from Muswellbrook High School which achieved the Peace Prize for Rotary District 9670 in 2004.
- Being a member of the MUNA Team from Muswellbrook High School which won the Rotary District Final and gained an Honourable Mention at the National Finals in Canberra.
- Assisting with coaching the 2006 MUNA Team from Muswellbrook High School.
- Being a member of the SRC for 5 years.
- Achieving the position of School Vice Captain in 2006.
- Representing the School community at functions such as Anzac Day.
- Being an active member of the Tamworth District and Hunter Region SRC.
- Being invited to address the Young Leaders Day gathering of over 3200 students in 2005
- Assisting the Hunter/Central Coast SRC with their Conference Organisation in 2006 by addressing students on the role of being a student representative.
Aaron is being recognised for his academic and community achievements which include:
- Achieving Dux of Year 10 in 2004 and Year 11 in 2005 at Muswellbrook High School;
- Being a member of Muswellbrook Shire Concert Band, Muswellbrook High Stage Band and Concert Band, “9 to Tango” Band;
- Playing Last Post when called on by RSL and for school at ANZAC services;
- Being involved with various productions by MATS and the Muswellbrook Shire Concert Band;
- Being nominated for the Young Musician of the Year for East Coast of NSW Band Association;
- Tutoring young musicians;
- Being an integral member of the school band which toured the primary schools of the Upper Hunter from Martindale to Blandford.
David is being recognised for his contribution to the local school and community including:
- Operation of the Muswellbrook High School Weather Station recording and transmitting weather details to NBN for the nightly news.
- Komatsu Academic Excellence Award & Muswellbrook High School Service Award 2004
- Awarded the Tamworth District Education Week Award for achievement and effort in promoting the activities of the Environmental Club and Commitment to the schools Environmental Program
