Archibald Prize NSW Regional Tour
Each year in accordance
with the bequest of Jules F. Archibald (1856-1919) the Trustees of the Art
Gallery of New South Wales invite artists to submit paintings in
competition for an annual prize (now in its 85th year), which is awarded
to the best portrait of a man or woman “distinguished in Art, Letters,
Science or Politics”. Marcus Wills has won the 2006 Archibald Prize.
The 2006 Archibald
Prize is presented by the Art gallery of NSW. The regional tour is
co-ordinated by Museums and Galleries NSW, and the event is sponsored by
Myer.

of The Muswellbrook Open Art Prize (1986-2006)
The Muswellbrook Open
Art Prize began in 1958 and is now a nationally recognised art prize on
the Australian cultural calendar with prize money of $16,000. This
retrospective exhibition profiles a selection of winning works from each
of the acquisitive categories - Painting, Works on Paper & Ceramics.

Lifes with Chrysanthemums
A selection of works
from the collection exploring flowers & still life. The gallery will
be filled with hundreds of fresh flowers when, in partnership with the
Muswellbrook & District Garden Club Inc, the Art Centre will host the
annual Chrysanthemum Show & Competition.

Esteves & Craig Dunn
Recent
work by two Upper Hunter ceramicists. Esteves’ installation
captures in porcelain the delicate beauty of sea sponges, washed up after
the storm.
‘Carnival’ is
the latest body of work by Dunn, this collection of sculptures explore
hybrid and fictive creatures. He combines ceramics, aerated concrete and
water in his figurative forms.

The
exhibition continues the ongoing work that
Williams
has been pursuing in landscape photography since his exhibitions
“Rubbished” and “After Tom” at Stills Gallery in 1999 and 2001.

Youth Snaps 2007
Youth Snaps is an exhibition series of four photographic workshops for young people aged 12 to 15 years, facilitated by Upper Hunter Community Services and muswellbrook regional arts centre. The workshops were held at the Arts Centre on consecutive Saturdays during April and early May as part of the 2007 Youth Week celebrations.
This year marks the second Youth Snaps event, following on from last year’s success.Youth Snaps attracted seven participants who learnt about camera techniques, composition, subject matter, lighting, photographic equipment, and photography styles by renowned and award winning local photographer, Danny Grabham. Participants were provided with a disposable camera after each session. The project also involved a field trip to Mt Rossgole.
All participants have had selected photographs enlarged, mounted, framed for the exhibition in the Community Room of the muswellbrook regional arts centre.Youth Snaps has been generously supported by Muswellbrook Shire Council’s Youth Week funding, and Upper Hunter Community Services Youth Development Project.

Drawn
Together – The Drawing Lives of Nora Heysen, Judy Cassab and Margaret
Woodward
This
touring exhibition consists of a gathering of drawings and associated
prints and paintings that span the lives of these three artists and covers
nearly 80 years of art making in Australia. The works are drawn from major
State and National collections as well as private collections, including
rare finds from the studios of the artists.
The exhibition aims to stimulate and educate both adults and
children.
Drawn
Together will provide people from across the Arts Centre’s catchments
(Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter Shires) and surrounding areas
with access to a detailed look at drawing.
Heysen,
Cassab and Woodward drew together for many years and formed close bonds.
They were all strong women in their own particular ways with an unerring
passion for art, a drive to excel and a sense of creative exploration that
ensures exciting discoveries for the viewer even in the nuances of a
momentary line. This exhibition explores the relationship between these
women, follows their drawing life lines and the nature of drawing within
their art. The exhibition shares the dialogue concerning drawing now in
contemporary art practice – as a method of making art, a way of seeing,
an art form in its own right and the role of drawing in our consciousness
as a culture.

The
Muswellbrook Open Art Prize began in 1958 and is now a nationally

money of $16,000. The Muswellbrook Open Art Prize features 2 sections -
Two Dimensional Painting of Any Subject in any medium & Drawing,
Watercolour or Print of any subject, in any medium on paper and The
Muswellbrook Open Ceramic Award. Entry forms for both awards will be
available in early June.
