The Hunter Learner Night Drive is a free community event organised by Hunter Valley Highway Patrol, Hunter Valley PD and Upper Hunter Shire, Muswellbrook Shire and Singleton councils. This event is to promote interaction between young drivers and police whilst providing a safe environment for learning and an opportunity to provide some education on driving safely on country roads.
This event is aimed toward learner drivers to expose them to real life driving scenarios when interacting with police in a controlled environment. Drivers will be given the opportunity to drive around the track and be subjected to stationary and mobile breath tests with police giving advice and guidance on how to safely undertake this task.
The track also includes a section allowing drivers to practice such things as reverse parallel parking, roadcraft and vehicle manoeuvring.
A display from our local rescue organisations will be at the event as well as a demonstration of rescue operators conducting a mock vehicle rescue.
Further events are planned with dates to be advised.
Hunter Learner Night Drive is for learner drivers only (of any age) who must be accompanied by an appropriate supervisor (25+) at all times. Please bring your driver’s licence as this will be sighted at registration – current Learner’s Licence (driver) and an Unrestricted Civil Road Licence (supervisor) must be provided.
Sessions run for around 1 ½ to 2 hours, where the Learner and Supervisor take to the track to experience driving at night (NOTE: there is no in-car instruction).
Drivers and their Supervisors begin with an introductory briefing and an information session discussing road safety.
Venue access and registration commences at 4:30pm, followed by a briefing, information session and rescue demonstration at 5pm. Drive sessions run from 8pm – 9:30pm.
Max Speed on the night is 50km/h. Drivers found in violation of these rules may be removed from the track.
All standard RMS Road Rules for Learners apply.
Vehicles restricted to Learner and Supervisor to limit distractions.
Night includes sausage sizzle and a can of drink for each Learner and Supervisor. Coffee, tea and other refreshments will be available for purchase from Bent Prop Cafe.
