Council’s Role

Muswellbrook Shire Council maintains a register of premises in the Local Government Area at which skin penetration procedures are carried out. The Council’s Environmental Health Officers conduct routine inspections of skin penetration, hairdressing and beauty premises to ensure the business is operating in accordance with relevant legislation and there are minimal health risks to members of the public.

Registration

If you own or operate a business in Muswellbrook that conducts hairdressing, beauty treatments or skin penetration procedures and are not currently registered, please notify Muswellbrook Shire Council by submitting the registration form below.

Fit Out and Construction

All premises, especially new premises, must be constructed and fitted out in accordance with the relevant legislation. This may include the condition and construction of the flooring, walls, ceilings, benches, chairs and the provision of adequate ventilation, hand wash basins and sinks.

In existing premises ongoing maintenance and repairs may be required to maintain the premise in a safe and suitable condition.

In premises that have not been approved as a hair or beauty premises you may need development consent prior to operation. Once you have a business plan, please contact Council’s Planning Department for further information.

Home Based Businesses

Should you wish to operate from a residential premises you will need to provide Council with information regarding your business plan prior to trade. This includes services you wish to conduct, site plan (internal floor plan diagram AND floor plan diagram of treatment rooms), how many customers you intend on having per day/week, any staff you may be employing, visitor parking, and hours of operation. Depending on services provided, you may require development consent prior to operation.

Compliance and Concerns
