Council Election Process

Learn more about the role of a local government council and how to become a councillor

What is a Local Government Council?

A Local Government Council is an elected body of councillors that makes decisions on behalf of electors, ratepayers and residents through a formal meeting process. Council members, including the mayor, do not have any authority to act or make decisions as individuals.

The role of a councillor is to provide leadership and guidance to the community and facilitate two-way communications between the community and council. A councillor will participate in decision making processes at council meetings, consider varying views of the community and act in the best interests of the Shire.

NSW Local Government elections are held every four years.
