National Carers Week is held annually during the third week of October. It’s an opportunity to raise community awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their caring roles.
Carers are people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental health condition, chronic or terminal illness, an alcohol or drug issue, or are frail due to age.
Anyone can become a carer at any time.
How to support a carer
Carers with access to support have significantly better wellbeing than those with limited or no support.
Here are a few simple ways to support a carer today:
- Check in regularly | Encourage carers to talk, if that’s helpful for them.
- Offer a break | Even a short break can help carers recharge.
- Acknowledge and appreciate | Recognise the vital role carers play.
- Initiate support | Ask how you can help with their needs.
- Encourage self-care | Remind carers to prioritise their wellbeing.
Where can carers get further support?
