Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre will be the focus of the artist community this weekend, with the launch of two significant exhibitions and last entries to one of Australia’s rising photography prizes.

The Mullins Conceptual Photography Prize, run by the Australian Photographic Society, closes to entries on Saturday June 14.

The national prize has increased its entry fee this year from $25 to $45, marking a growing presence on Australia’s artistic calendar.

Also on Saturday, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre will open two fresh exhibitions:

  • The Carousel of Invisibility by Julie Visible, a former Mullins Prize finalist and Muswellbrook’s 2023 Artist in Residence.
  • Women on Country, a touring exhibition celebrating First Nations women artists and deep cultural connections to land.
Gallery Director Elissa Emerson said the program reflects a commitment to elevating bold new work and meaningful engagement between artists, Muswellbrook Shire locals and the artist community.

“Whether it’s showcasing the complexity and power of photographs or exploring the deep significance of Country through culture, this is a broader collection of work that shares the theme of connection,” Ms Emerson said.

“Through residencies, prizes and community-facing exhibitions we’re investing in the long-term cultural growth of Muswellbrook Shire and the Hunter.”

In further support of the creative community, the Council-backed Artist in Residence program has supported the development of 15 artists across eight residencies, with many going on to exhibit nationally.

Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton said Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre is an asset to the Shire that is only getting better.

“This gallery punches above its weight and I’m proud, like many in our community, to have something of this quality in Muswellbrook Shire for artists and lovers of art,” Mayor Drayton said.

“Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre brings the best to town and brings locals up close with an impressive variety of art on our doorstep. If you haven’t been to the gallery lately or have never been in there, you are missing out, it is a must-see experience.”
