Muswellbrook Shire Council operates two waste management facilities:
What to expect when you arrive
The Waste Operator will first ask you what you have in the vehicle. Your vehicle will also be weighed, and the Operator will then inspect the load and may ask you additional questions in order to direct you to the correct areas of site and to help ensure all patrons and staff stay safe.
All incoming loads are subject to inspection, and you are required to declare all items upon entry.
Site rules
- Obey speed limits, signs and all staff instructions.
- Wear enclosed footwear. It is also strongly advised that you wear suitable personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and safety glasses.
- Keep children and pets inside your vehicle.
- Do not smoke or vape anywhere on site.
- Separate your waste into material types.
What can I take to Muswellbrook Waste & Recycling Facility?
Fees apply for waste disposal and some recycling services. The list of applicable fees is available in Council’s Fees & Charges document.
Tip: separating your waste types will keep fees down! Some waste types are free or have lower fees, but mixed waste attracts the maximum fee.
Approved items include:
To landfill
- Asbestos (by prior arrangement only – click here for booking process and conditions)
- Dead animals
- Mixed waste
- Steel reinforced concrete
- Treated or painted timbers
To the recycling area
Household quantities only:
- Brown corrugated cardboard (if flattened and pieces no larger than 1 square metre)
- Recyclables (comingled recyclables of Muswellbrook Shire origin only) – including plastic bottles and food containers, glass bottles, paper and cardboard, aluminium cans and steel cans
To the resource recovery area
- Car bodies (ID required)
- Scrap metal recycling
- Concrete or rubble (clean)
- Green waste
- Mattress and mattress bases
- Soil (clean)
- Timber and timber pallets
- Tyres (truck, light truck, 4WD, passenger tyres or smaller)
- Whitegoods – including refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners
To the Community Recycling Centre
Household problem wastes (domestic quantities only) including:
- Gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Paint (water or oil based)
- Waste motor or cooking oil
- Fluorescent tubes and globes
- Aerosol cans
- Electronic items (e-waste)
- Household batteries
- Smoke detectors
- Automotive batteries
Accessing the landfill tip face
Access to the landfill void is available only to commercial carriers between the hours of 8am to 3:30pm weekdays.
As an operating landfill, there are risks involved with accessing the tip face. Access is granted at management’s discretion and may be refused in the event of extreme weather, emergency or any safety concern.
Entry to the landfill tip face is at your own risk, but the following rules are in place to prioritise the safety of all patrons and staff:
- Access is restricted to vehicles with tipping capacity only.
- Ensure you keep to established tracks.
- All vehicles entering the landfill must be equipped with a UHF and access channel 18 for positive communication with landfill plant operators.
What can I tip in the landfill?
General solid waste (putrescible and non-putrescible)
Asbestos Waste (special conditions apply)
The following waste types must not be disposed in landfill:
- Metals
- Electronic items
- Batteries of any kind
- Liquids of any kind
- Firearms, ammunition or flares
- Poisons or chemicals
Manual handling is everyone’s responsibility! Make sure you are familiar with manual handling techniques so you can prioritise safety at our facility.
Applying for a credit account
Council offers 30-day credit accounts to approved clients. If you would like to apply for an account with Muswellbrook Waste & Recycling Facility, fully complete the below form and return to Muswellbrook Shire Council using the contact details supplied on the form. Allow a minimum of 5 working days for applications to be processed.

Accounts are issued monthly and are strictly 30 days. Accounts not accessed within a 12 month period will require submission of a new application form.
