A new walking path in Denman, around the wetland area between Babbington and Macauley streets, is now open for residents and visitors alike.
For more than 10 years Muswellbrook Shire Council has been working with community volunteers and 1st Denman Scouts, as part of National Tree Day, to enhance a natural area around the wetland.
The new path brings the nature experience to an urban environment and features educational signs and fun animal statues alongside the picturesque wetland.
Acting General Manager Derek Finnigan said wetlands are maintained differently to parks or open green spaces.
Acting General Manager Derek Finnigan“For example, the grass is left longer to provide habitat for animals such as finches.”
While planned to increase the habitat for a wide range of native animals, they nevertheless also allow people to visit and enjoy the environment.
Acting General Manager Derek Finnigan“It is essential that wetland areas are preserved. These important areas provide shade and help to improve soil health but also people can use the path and appreciate the plants and animals,” he said.
Anyone wishing to join in sustainability activities, such as tree planting, should contact Council on 6549 3700 or email sustainability@muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au or follow Sustainable Futures – Muswellbrook on Facebook.
