Muswellbrook Shire Council is once again inviting owners of heritage-listed properties to apply for funding through the Local Heritage Assistance Fund (LHAF), as a means of helping locals care for the buildings that hold our stories.

The fund offers dollar-for-dollar support of up to $4,000 for conservation works, assisting with the repair, restoration, and maintenance of heritage buildings across the Shire.

The 2025 Local Heritage Assistance Fund opens for applications on Wednesday 16 July and closes on Friday 15 August. Funding may be available for heritage properties listed in the Muswellbrook Local Environmental Plan or identified in a Heritage Conservation Area.

Mayor Jeff Drayton said, “These buildings are part of who we are. Council is proud to support locals doing the dedicated work to keep them standing for future generations.”

Examples of eligible works include:

  • Repairing walls, verandahs, windows, or roof plumbing.
  • Rebuilding an original part of a building.
  • Rebuilding decorative render on a building that has chipped.
  • Replacing aluminium-framed windows with timber-framed windows.
Previous recipients of the grant, Holger and Marianne Brockman, accessed two rounds of grant funding, to restore the roof and construct a new period-appropriate verandah on the Kerrabee homestead, significantly improving the home’s integrity and heritage charm.

“All support was gratefully accepted. It meant we could use some of the traditional materials, so the homestead could keep its true character. It’s beautiful and historic, and we’re determined not to lose that,” Mrs Brockman said.

Muswellbrook Shire Council’s Heritage Advisor is available to provide advice to applicants by calling (02) 6549 3700. Successful projects must demonstrate heritage value, community benefit, and appropriate conservation practices.
