Muswellbrook families will unlock a world of reading from today with the acclaimed Dolly Parton Imagination Library now delivering to homes in the Shire.

The award-winning program founded by the beloved entertainer and philanthropist will gift a free, high-quality children’s book each month to every child in Muswellbrook Shire born after July 1, delivered to their home from birth to age five.

The initiative comes to Muswellbrook kids in partnership between AGL, Muswellbrook Shire Libraries, United Way Australia and Hunter New England Health with the goal to boost early literacy, strengthen family bonds and spark a lifelong love of reading.

Lauren Allan, Head Librarian at Muswellbrook Shire Libraries, said the program will complement Shire libraries’ existing early literacy programs such as 1000 Books Before School.

“The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a wonderful way to nurture a lifelong love of reading from the very beginning. It’s about the magic of a bedtime story, the possibilities found in every book and the joy of reading together as a family,” Mrs Allan said.

“The beauty of the program is the inclusion of Australian books which reflect our local children’s own voices and landscapes – we’re delighted to deliver this program for families in Muswellbrook Shire.”

AGL’s partnership underscores its commitment to supporting the Muswellbrook community, and Bayswater Power Station General Manager Len McLachlan expressed enthusiasm about its impact on future generations.

“We’re all fans of Dolly Parton and even greater supporters of her initiative to enhance literacy worldwide. Literacy is the cornerstone of lifelong learning, creativity and opportunity,” Mr McLachlan said.

“By nurturing these skills from an early age, children are set on a path to success. AGL is proud to sponsor Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, equipping young minds in Muswellbrook Shire with the tools to dream big and achieve their potential.”

Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton said the Imagination Library has the potential to brighten homes across Muswellbrook Shire.

“Reading is something that should be for everyone, and this fantastic program gives every child in Muswellbrook the chance to shine,” Mayor Drayton said.

“This is about giving every family, no matter their postcode or their bank account, the chance to build literacy, confidence and a priceless family connection from day one.”

Families can register for the Imagination Library online at their first home visit with HNE Health Child and Family Health nurses, or by registering through the Library at: libraries.muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au/your-library/dolly-parton-imagination-library/

Each eligible child will receive a welcome book after signing up with a new book each month until they turn five. A launch event will be held at Muswellbrook Library on Monday, July 28 – and everyone’s invited.
