Following extensive consultation and research, the development of a tailored tourism model to respond directly to the region’s unique opportunities and challenges has been endorsed by Muswellbrook Shire and Upper Hunter Shire councils.
Supported by Destination Sydney Surrounds North and Upper Hunter Country Tourism, the model will bring government and business together to promote the region and grow the visitor economy. This will lay the foundation for future success and is forecast to have widespread benefits for local business, jobs and population growth.
Muswellbrook Shire Mayor Steve Reynolds said activating tourism opportunities across the whole Upper Hunter can only bring welcome new economic activity and visitors to the area.
Mayor Steve Reynolds“This, in turn, supports local businesses, creates new jobs and will improve liveability in our shires. In the current climate, with evolving economic conditions and an increased focus on the Hunter, the timing is right for this innovative approach.
“By developing a fit-for-purpose model and formalising a collaborative approach we can open up more opportunities for significant funding for projects and events which will, potentially, benefit the whole area” he said.
Upper Hunter Shire Mayor, Maurice Collison, echoed Mayor Reynolds’ sentiments, stating, “This teamwork is a shining example of what we can pull off when local councils come together with a shared goal. By creating a welcoming space for tourism to grow, we’re not only boosting the charm of the Upper Hunter region but also building a strong base for steady economic growth.
Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Maurice Collison“The solid partnership between Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter councils, backed by the support from Destination Sydney Surrounds North and Upper Hunter Country Tourism, strengthens our aim to cultivate a bustling visitor economy that gives back to our local communities,” he said.
Upper Hunter Country Tourism has been working towards establishing a regional approach for some time and has welcomed the collaboration as a way to reinvigorate tourism and provide real benefits to tourism operators.
The model will be communicated to businesses, stakeholders and the community in early 2024, prior to the first meeting of the alliance.
