Muswellbrook Shire Council is deeply saddened by the passing of Emeritus Mayor John Colvin AM, RFD, ED.

John Colvin was born in Sydney on 27 June 1936 and attended Sydney Grammar School. Mr Colvin had a distinguished military career, which included being made a member of the Order of Australia in the 1985 Australia Day Honours before retiring from the Active Army Reserve in 1991. Alongside his military career, Mr Colvin served as a high school teacher for 35 years, concluding his tenure at Muswellbrook High School in 1996.

After Mr Colvin moved to Muswellbrook, he became actively involved in the local community. He dedicated his time to numerous organisations, including pre-school education, Legacy, and the Anglican Church. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music and the Mining Industry Skills Centre. His commitment extended to his work with the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers and his leadership as Chair of the First World War Centenary Events Working Party.

In 1991, Mr Colvin was elected to Muswellbrook Shire Council, where he served with distinction. He was Deputy Mayor for seven years and held the position of Mayor from 1999 to 2008. In recognition of his contributions to the community, he was awarded the Freedom of the Entry to the Shire in 2016, the highest honour that can be bestowed by Muswellbrook Shire Council.

In 2022, Mr Colvin received a Certificate of Acknowledgement from Local Government NSW, recognising his emeritus status and honouring his exceptional service as Mayor.

Mayor Jeff Drayton and the councillors and staff of Muswellbrook Shire Council extend their heartfelt condolences to Mr Colvin’s family and friends. His dedication and impact on the Shire will be remembered with deep gratitude.
