Before the next big earthquake there are four steps that will make you, your family, or your workplace better prepared to act and recover quickly. During the next big earthquake, and immediately after, is when your level of preparedness will make a difference in how you and others can remain safe in and respond to emergencies.
Prepare
- Secure your space by identifying hazards and securing moveable items.
- Plan to be safe by creating your emergency plan and deciding how you will communicate.
- Organise emergency supplies in convenient locations.
- Minimise financial hardship by organising important documents, strengthening your property, and considering insurance coverage.
Act
- Drop, cover, and hold on when you feel shaking.
- Improve safety after earthquakes by evacuating if necessary, seeking first aid, helping the injured, and preventing further injuries or damage.
Recover
- Reconnect and restore daily life by reuniting with others, repairing damage, and rebuilding community.
- If your property is damaged, contact your insurance company as soon as possible and take photos to help speed up the assessment of insurance claims.
