With the help of Sunny Spark, Council’s Sustainability Unit encourages and supports community members to be energy smart. Council is also working on increasing the amount of renewable energy used in Council facilities.
Follow us on Facebook at Sustainable Futures – Muswellbrook.
The Sustainability Unit offers community members the chance to participate in:
- Energy audits of their home, community facility or business.
- Workshops on subjects such as being more energy efficient.
- Visits to educational facilities to participate in activities about being energy smart.
- Puppet shows with Sunny Spark.
- Financial incentives for energy smart products and initiatives (subject to change and conditions).
The Sustainability Unit works on a range of initiatives relating to energy. This includes monitoring and reducing Council’s energy consumption, replacing inefficient lighting, working towards a Renewable Energy Target (RET) and increasing the amount of solar energy used in Council facilities.
Sustainability staff are available to help residents reduce electricity consumption in their homes. For more information, please contact the Sustainability Unit on (02) 6549 3700.
Cooling Your Home
Most homes in Australia are not built for extreme heat – however there are DIY measures that can make your home more comfortable and safe.
The Cooling Your Home booklet from Beyond Zero Emissions is proudly funded by the NSW Government – Increasing Resilience to Climate Change community grant program and offers tips on the most cost-effective measures to cool your home.
The booklet includes information on how to:
- choose and use fans, air conditioners, sprinklers and ventilation
- combat bushfire smoke and pathogens
- prepare for a blackout during a heatwave
- use housing retrofits such as curtains and blinds, insulation, shading and cool gardens
- create a cool retreat
