Overview
Muswellbrook Shire Council is pleased to advise that the Muswellbrook Sewer Pumping Station 1 (MSPS#1) Upgrade was completed in June 2026, marking a major milestone in the planned upgrades of Muswellbrook’s sewer transportation infrastructure.
Originally constructed around 1939, MSPS#1 had reached the end of its service life and no longer complied with current legislative and industry requirements for sewage pumping stations in NSW. The upgrade replaces ageing infrastructure with a modern pumping station that meets current standards and improves the reliability and resilience of Muswellbrook’s sewer network.
The need for the upgrade was identified through Council’s Muswellbrook Sewer Transport System Options Strategy (2014), which recommended replacing the existing structure with a new pumping station. Following a competitive tender process, Council awarded the Design and Construction contract to KCE Pty Ltd in December 2024. Construction commenced in July 2025 following completion of the design phase.
Construction was undertaken while the existing pumping station remained operational, allowing sewerage services to continue without disruption to the community. The project was delivered on schedule and within budget, with only a one-week weather-related delay during excavation.
